One of the few surviving "lanes" in Carlisle, the first mention of a "Rose & Crown" in Lowthians Lane occurs in 1829, but the property is thought to be 18th Century. In February 1908, the local magistrates refused to renew its licence as the premises were said to be "badly ventilated, badly lighted, insanitary, structurally unfit, unnecessary for the requirements of the district and not capable of proper supervision". Nevertheless, the pub struggled on with final closure coming in June 1911 - before the advent of the State Management Scheme. The premises have been substantially altered since 1911 and are now presumably structurally fit!
