Former "Bowling Green Hotel", Lowther Street - March 2018
Believed built on the site of a pub called the "Shakespeare Tavern", "The Bowling Green Hotel/Inn" first appears in the local directory for 1837 and probably dates from 2nd quarter 19th Century. It had a bowling green, but this is believed removed in 1971. Acquired by the State Management Scheme on 24 July 1916, it was sold circa 1971 to become a Probation Hostel. This appears to have opened in 1974, but saw serious rioting by inmates on 8 October 1999, when what remained of the bowling green was destroyed. It is currently serving as the Bowling Green Probation & Bail Hostel.
