Old Milestone by the A7, Kingstown Road, Carlisle
Metal plate attached to stone post by the A7, in parish of CARLISLE (CARLISLE District), Kingstown Road, opposite No. 236, at junction with Parkhouse Road, beside HSBC Bank, on the slip road leading to retail park; back to retaining wall, on West side of road. Carlisle round iron plate, erected by the Kingstown & Westlinton Bridge turnpike trust in the 19th century.

Toll house converted to a bank
The building now occupied by HSBC Bank was originally the Kingstown toll cottage. A plaque on the side wall dates it circa 1820, for Glasgow and Edinburgh toll roads 1815 to 1883. There is a view from the other side of the building here Image .
Historic England's photo archive has several views of the cottage taken in 1971, eg https://www.historicengland.org.uk/images-books/photos/englands-places/card/45169?place=Kingstown%2c+Cumbria+(Place)&terms=kingstown&searchtype=englandsplaces&i=-1&wm=1&bc=0%7c13%7c18%7c19&g=1530 . The building appears to have been extended since then, and the surroundings have changed considerably.
