Carlisle old brewery
Viewed from Devonshire Walk across the river and railway. Built in the mid-19th century, on an older brewery site, for the Carlisle Old Brewery Company, becoming part of the Theakstons group in 1974. Part of the brewery was demolished after closure in 1987, the rest has been converted to a student residence and gym. For a fuller history see the grade II listing (list entry 1208869).

Former Carlisle Old Brewery - November 2016 (1)
While the brewery was established in 1756, its exact location is uncertain - although it was on this site at Caldewgate in 1791. Under State management from August 1916, the brewery was sold to Theakstons in 1972. Brewing ceased in 1987, with the buildings seen here converted to student accommodation and a seasonal youth hostel. Recent press reports indicate the premises are currently being refurbished and upgraded to private apartments. Site is warden controlled with no public access.
