While the brewery was established in 1756, its exact location is uncertain - although it was on this site at Caldewgate in 1791. Under State management from August 1916, the brewery was sold to Theakstons in 1972. Brewing ceased in 1987, with the buildings seen here converted to student accommodation and a seasonal youth hostel. Recent press reports indicate the premises are currently being refurbished and upgraded to private apartments. Site is warden controlled with no public access.
