Running round at Appleby (2 of 3)
The train shown in the previous photo Image next had to cross from the down to the up line through the station, using a trailing crossover. After this it reversed back up the up line of the Warcop branch, ready to come back into the platform for the 12.36 departure to Leeds. The train is Northern's Sprinter unit 158815.

This shot is later in the day than the previous two photos Image Image but the same Sprinter unit 158815 completes the set of shunting operations as it comes back off the branch line into the up platform to form the 15.43 departure to Leeds.

North of Appleby Station
47555 "The Commonwealth Spirit" was working a railtour from Norwich, Norfolk, to Carlisle and had paused at Appleby station for a photo stop. The signal box in the background is Appleby North, which is 277 miles 34 chains from London St Pancras Station, via Normanton. The lines diverging here go to Appleby East junction and give access to the Warcop Branch.

Running round at Appleby (1 of 3)
It is rare to see the smaller semaphore signal here in the up ("off") position, as it signals a move to the sidings that formerly gave access to the Warcop line branch (part of which is now used as a heritage railway, but otherwise disused). In this instance it was signalling a move off the main line for a terminating train onto the down line on the branch. The train is Northern's Sprinter unit 158815, that had formed the 09.47 from Leeds, terminating here at 11.37.
