47555 "The Commonwealth Spirit" was working a railtour from Norwich, Norfolk, to Carlisle and had paused at Appleby station for a photo stop. The signal box in the background is Appleby North, which is 277 miles 34 chains from London St Pancras Station, via Normanton. The lines diverging here go to Appleby East junction and give access to the Warcop Branch.
