Holywell Crescent houses
Ordnance Survey records indicate that a benchmark was cut in 1972 on the near corner of the right hand house, but the mark may have been lost to repairs to the brickwork. There are more details at www.bench-marks.org.uk/bm113311

Botcherby Dairy
Viewed from Durranhill Bridge - the entrance is in Holywell Crescent (right). For many years this was a Co-op dairy. It was acquired by Dairy Farmers of Britain http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dairy_Farmers_of_Britain in 2004, and was used as a milk distribution depot until the farmers' co-operative collapsed in June 2009. Most of the buildings were demolished in the second half of 2010.

VTEC diversions - 16 September 2016 (1)
During week-ends in September and October 2016, the East Coast Main Line was closed north of Newcastle for engineering works. Accordingly, Virgin Trains East Coast (VTEC) services diverted over Newcastle - Carlisle, adding somewhat to journey times to/from Edinburgh and King's Cross. Headed by Virgin Trains HST 43257, train 1E05 - the 07.04 passenger service from Edinburgh to King's Cross - passes the little-used Durranhill Sidings outside Carlisle.

Accordingly, Virgin Trains East Coast (VTEC) services diverted over Newcastle - Carlisle, adding somewhat to journey times to/from Edinburgh and King's Cross. While most trains were in the hands of HST sets, DB Schenker liveried 67015 did make an appearance - seen passing Durranhill Sidings with train 1E07, the 08.24 passenger service from Edinburgh to King's Cross.

View over western parapet of Durranhill Bridge (Eastern Way)
The embankment in the middle ground carried a railway bridge which was demolished when Eastern Way was completed. There was an Ordnance Survey benchmark on the parapet of the old bridge: see www.bench-marks.org.uk/bm113439

Remains of old bridge, Durranhill
Taken from the "new" Durranhill Bridge (parapet on right), opened in 1969, which carries Eastern Way over Durranhill Road and a couple of railway lines. The old bridge stayed put, with pedestrian access, for many years. We do not know when it was demolished, but it still appears intact on Google satellite and OS Get-a-Map at time of posting. It is puzzling why this little bit, over the Carlisle to Newcastle railway, was left. For another view, see Image . The chimney on the left is at Botcherby Dairy (demolished 2010), with Botcherby housing estate behind that.

Disused bridge on the Carlisle to Newcastle Railway
The Carlisle to Newcastle railway passes under the remaining part of a disused railway bridge east of Durranhill Junction. This photo was taken from a bridge close to the east which presumably replaced the partially removed structure in the photograph.
