Portland Square Gardens
The building directly across the street is Carlisle Register Office.
Information update : About three years after this photo was taken, the Register Office was relocated to Petteril Bank (see Image).

Former telephone exchange, Cecil Street
BT stopped using the site in 2005. After conversion, most of the building was occupied by a 66 bedroom Travelodge hotel, which opened in 2008. There is a dental practice on the ground floor, and office space on the first floor.
The building is now called Exchange House. The date 1955 is inscribed by the front door - see Image .

Royal cypher at Travelodge Hotel
The front door of Travelodge Carlisle Central. It was originally a GPO building - see Image .
The carved cypher has a crown over the initials of the monarch EIIR, and date 1955.

Railings, Portland Square Gardens
The gardens were laid out in 1870, as the surrounding square was being developed with houses. Originally reserved for the well-to-do residents, it later became a public park.
The wall and railings are Grade II listed. The Historic England description http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/details/default.aspx?id=386838 mentions that the ironwork is impressed with the name of the foundry - Lees & Graham of Carlisle. That will be something to look for, one of these days.
