Former holiday bungalows, Whitehead
During the early part of the 20th century east Antrim, roughly from Eden to Islandmagee, was a popular spot for wooden holiday bungalows. These two (then vacant and boarded-up and subsequently removed) were beside the Blackhead path (“Old Castle Road” on the Google map) to the lighthouse. For another example (also removed) see Image (July 2009).

Whitehead to Blackhead (10)
See Image Taken from almost the same place but higher up the steps this view shows the coastal path. From here on it starts to squeeze its way between the bottom of the cliffs (typical of this part of Co Antrim) and the waters of Belfast Lough. In 1917 the 4,000 tons “Chirripo”, outbound from Belfast was sunk, just offshore, by German mines. Continue to Image

Whitehead to Blackhead (9)
See Image Just north of the previous photo the inland path resumes, climbing up the cliffs by a long set of steep steps. The coastal path, which follows the cliffs at sea level, has been subject to falling rocks. Part of the cliff face is now covered by wire mesh. Continue to Image

Two paths at Whitehead
See Image In reality, it’s really the same path leading along the shore, uphill to the lighthouse, then inland and back down to the shore.
