Joy Street, Belfast (May 2018)
“The Troubles” generated (at least) two lasting changes to urban planning in NI. The first was the closure of town-centre streets to vehicular traffic (other than deliveries) - later established practice enhanced by environmental improvements. Once it became clear that civil disorder was going to be a feature of urban life, new social housing was built in a manner intended to eliminate long, through streets replacing them with short cul-de-sacs which could be blocked by just one army or police Land Rover. The practice evolved into today’s “courtyard” designs Image This scene is towards the Ormeau Avenue end of Joy Street - used only as an example.

Catherine Street, Belfast
The present Catherine Street (off Cromac Street) follows a similar line to its mid-19th century predecessor. Today’s is a cul-de-sac for vehicles but it's still possible to walk through to Hamilton Street.

The rear of elaborate buildings tends to be plain or utilitarian. St Malachy’s is an exception where the back (Joy Street) is almost as distinguished as the front Image The view is along Henrietta Street.

St Malachy's (RC) church, Belfast
St Malachy’s (RC) church, in Alfred Street, was built in 1840/44 and is regarded as a classic example of Tudor revival. It was renovated in 1926 and is now in the midst of another one. For the time being, it is coated with a fine layer of dust. This is part of the façade above the main door. Continue to Image

Former Walpole's warehouse, Belfast (detail)
The two linen warehouses at nos 19 and 21 Alfred Street were built in 1912 for the Walpole Brothers. The architect was James A Hanna. Like most of the street they were vacant and in a sorry state. Like most of the present street they have been rejuvenated and are now used as offices. These macabre figures adorn no 21. The more benign shield reads “PURE FLAX”.
