Container train, Lisburn
When this was taken there were cross-Border freight trains to Belfast and Londonderry. The latter were worked to Lisburn by CIE locomotives. The practice was that they continued to Londonderry (hauled by NIR railcars which would otherwise have been idle) overnight. This arrangement worked reasonably well and allowed NIR to benefit from the traffic (which was mainly for Co Donegal) without the expense of buying additional locomotives.
The CIE locomotive is leaving its afternoon train (from Dundalk) in Lisburn yard where it would remain until almost midnight.

Football special, Lisburn
An eight-car MPD set for supporters of Ballymena United who were playing Ards in the Irish Cup final at Windsor Park (close to Adelaide station). Ards won 2-1 before 7,000 spectators. The teams’ attendances in 2009 were similar to some in the Scottish Division Two. For the equivalent in 2014 see Image

Weed control train at Lisburn station - 1977
While still in the hands of Northern Ireland Railways' less than successful diesel hydraulic locomotives, NIR had abandoned the "Heath-Robinson" contraption seen in Image in favour of hiring the CIE weed control train for the 1977 spraying season. Diesel hydraulic No. 2 is about to depart Lisburn to spray the former GNR(I) branch line to Antrim.

Freight train, Lisburn
Cross-Border freight is now history. In this shot two CIE locomotives double-head an evening freight from Belfast’s Adelaide yard to Dundalk. Traffic was seldom heavy enough to justify double heading – this was simply a way of avoiding a light-engine working.
