When this was taken there were cross-Border freight trains to Belfast and Londonderry. The latter were worked to Lisburn by CIE locomotives. The practice was that they continued to Londonderry (hauled by NIR railcars which would otherwise have been idle) overnight. This arrangement worked reasonably well and allowed NIR to benefit from the traffic (which was mainly for Co Donegal) without the expense of buying additional locomotives. The CIE locomotive is leaving its afternoon train (from Dundalk) in Lisburn yard where it would remain until almost midnight.
