This Georgian house was once associated with the Barbour family who made their fortune in linen thread. Today it is best known for the Hilden Brewery, and associated Tap Room restaurant, located to the rear of the house.

Hilden Brewery
Established in 1981, Hilden is Ireland's oldest independent brewery. On this site in the outskirts of Lisburn there is both the brewery itself and a licensed restaurant where, of course, the products can be purchased to accompany a meal.

Former Barbour's Mill. Hilden (5)
Four days later this building (on the southern side of the site) was damaged by a serious fire. To quote from a media report “More than 60 firefighters tackled a blaze at the five floor Hilden Mill on Saturday afternoon. No-one was injured and the fire was brought under control, and DOE officials have been advised that the building - a Victorian textiles mill - appears to be stable. "I commend the valiant efforts of around 60 firefighters to bring this fire under control and save these buildings," said [Environment] minister Alex Attwood. "Their prompt response has ensured that the Hilden Mill complex - although damaged significantly - has not been destroyed. They have my admiration and sincere thanks."” Continue to Image

Former Barbour's Mill, Hilden (6)
See Image I walked along the towpath, from Lambeg, arriving at Hilden just after 09.20. At a distance of, perhaps, a ¼ mile there was a strong smell of burning/smoke which I thought was inevitable since the extensive fire was still less than a day ago. I did notice, however, that there was smoke coming from the top of the building (middle of the photograph). From thus angle, on the towpath, the damage was not particularly apparent. Image gives a better idea of the damage.
