Mural, Northumberland Street, Belfast [4]
Very different from the rest of the murals in the street, this one has the style of a 'Banksy'. Close to the peaceline with the Shankill Road, perhaps the artist is expressing a desire to break down barriers between the divided communities.

On a wall in Andersonstown, Belfast
Walking around Belfast now, although you feel quite safe, the Unionist and Republican areas still have their distinctive murals and panels so there is never any doubt which area you are in. This is on a wall in the Republican Falls Road in Andersonstown, West Belfast and is on the corner of Northumberland Street, close to the junction with Falls Road. For more information about the Battle of the Falls see https://thehistorypress.co.uk/article/the-falls-curfew-reassessing-the-past/ and another board near the Falls Road Garden of Remembrance can be seen at https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/7883077.

Northumberland Street Murals
Northumberland Street is a street in West Belfast that connects Divis Street and Shankill Road. It is one of several streets that link Loyalist and Republican communities in the area. The International Wall on Divis Street extends up Northumberland Street along its western perimeter and continues around into Beverley Street on the northern perimeter. There are two sets of security gates across Northumberland Street, Northumberland Street is divided by two sets of security gates, forming a part of the lengthy "peace" line. Despite the Good Friday agreement of 1998, the Peace Wall, which stands at around six metres tall, still marks the boundary between the Republican and Loyalist areas of Belfast. The gate located at Northumberland Street shuts every evening at 8 pm. The murals on Northumberland Street are a mix of international and local concerns.

Mural, Falls Road, Belfast [2]
Another mural on the 'International Wall' this depicts Frederick Douglass (1815-1895), a former slave who became one of the foremost leaders of the abolitionist movement which fought to end slavery within the United States in the decades prior to the Civil War. Douglass later served as an adviser to President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War and fought for the adoption of constitutional amendments that guaranteed voting rights and other civil liberties for blacks. He is still revered today for his contributions against racial injustice. See http://www.history.rochester.edu/class/douglass/home.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Douglass for detailed biographies.

Mural, Falls Road, Belfast [3]
Another mural on the 'International Wall' this mural is perhaps unique in the history of Belfast murals in that it was a collaboration between political activists from across the religious / sectarian divide. It features an anti-war mural based the painting Guernica by Pablo Picasso which depicted the 1937 Nazi German bombing of the town in Spain. It was painted by Danny Devenney, a renowned nationalist painter, together with Mark Ervine, the son of the late progressive unionist leader David Ervine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Ervine .
