The "Royal Exchange" site, North Street, Belfast (3)
A building at the Bridge Street/Rosemary Street end (evens) of North Street. It seems to be included in the “Royal Exchange” planning application as “1495/DCA Nos. 3-5, 9-13 and 27-31 Rosemary Street (BT1 1QA) and 2-22 and 30-34 North Street, Belfast (BT1 1LA) Demolition of buildings”.

Boarded-up windows, Belfast
This office building is at the Bridge Street end of Lower North Street Image Built in (I think) the late 1960’s it was (before the bombing campaign) quite a prestigious place. Its tenants included the Bank of Nova Scotia on the ground floor and Air Canada upstairs – alas not now.

Drainpipe and column, Belfast
Irrespective of the malaise (or blight) affecting Lower North Street it does have two examples of (vaguely) Art Deco architecture. The dated drainpipe (left) is on no 15 while no 17 has this ornate column and a fancy window to boot. The former Sinclair’s department store Image (from the same era) is at the other end of the street.

Architectural fruit, Belfast
Even the smaller Victorian building in Belfast had some sort of decoration. Nothing too elaborate in this case in Lower North Street (no 9 I think), just some grapes.

"Closed Wednesday" sign, Belfast
A shutter door on this building in Lower North Street Image Until the early 1980’s just about every shop in central Belfast (except Woolworths and a few small newsagents) closed at lunchtime on Wednesdays for the half day – including the national multiples. An early closing day and closing at lunchtime are now almost extinct features of any shop anywhere in NI.
