Entrance to the Tobacco Factory theatre in Bedminster
This Franklyn Davey & Company edifice was named after one of the smaller Bristol tobacco firms which had been acquired by the giant Imperial Tobacco in 1901. The building was completed in 1912 to the design of architect Sir Frank Wills, son of HO Wills, the Chairman of the famous firm of WD & HO Wills. Sir Frank was Lord Mayor of Bristol as well as being the architect of this and other brick buildings on Wills/Imperial sites in Bristol - at East Street and Raleigh Road, Bedminster. Interestingly, the world HQ of Imperial Tobacco is still a few streets away, in Bedminster - the suburb of Bristol which provided much of the housing for the Wills' workers.

The old fire station on Raleigh Road
This area of Ashton was once open land before the nineteenth century brought much housing and industry. Firstly, the Victoria Cavendish works (the Export Department of W.D. & H.O Wills) were constructed around the late 1880s - of the Wills Tobacco empire. Here one of the old buildings (originally a garage) has been redeveloped into modern residential use, but with a nod to its past.

An unofficial plaque
Bristol is home to some off-beat and sometimes outrageous counter-cultures. This well-made plaque is 'Unauthorised Heritage' and raises the topic of the slave trade and Bristol's part in it. Although the essence may be incontrovertable, historians might debate the specific details. The brick wall is part of the (equally objectionable?) tobacco buildings that populate this part of south Bristol. Softer materials have enticed many to leave their own work.
