Heathens' Burial Corner, Steyning
The area has been known as Heathen Burials since at least the 13th century and was later applied to the junction of the ancient roads to Sompting and Coombes. An excavation at the turn of this century to the rear of the site in nearby Coombe Drive uncovered a body believed to have been buried around a thousand years ago perhaps for an offence against the church. The place name was once more prevalent and may have had its origins during the Saxon period as a place of executions though the name 'Heathen' was sometimes applied to those not from the area. There is also some suggestion that this was an early meeting place of the local Hundred court.

Offset crossroads at Steyning
The road opposite is Bostal Road, a narrow lane that starts at Sompting on the A27, then climbs the southern slopes of the South Downs via the top of Steyning Hill to drop sharply into Steyning.
