A Shoreham-by-sea street close to the sea. Some interesting bungalows with very few original from the 1910's left.

Looking along Old Fort Road. The road was first shown on the 1912 25" map as a footpath, but with housing on the south side (right hand side in this photo). Both sides had been built up by the 1930s, as shown on the 1937 25" map, but then much of the area was cleared in the Second World War to avoid the area's use as a beach-head. As a result the 1949 6" map only shows houses along the left hand side, with the right hand side (backing on to the beach) containing only empty plots. From the appearance of the houses seen here, there has been significant redevelopment since then.

I think one or two of the original railway carriage bungalows may have survived as the army saved and used the more sturdier structures on the beach and demolished the rest. The original bungalows had two third class railway carriages placed on a concrete base side by side, then roofed over with many others eventually built around. These two are on the corner of Ferry Road and Old Fort Road though I've no idea if these are 51950s rebuilds or original survivors.

Shoreham Beach became a Local Nature Reserve in 2006 because of its habitat of vegetated shingle. A Friends of Shoreham Beach was set up to help conserve and protect this environment and raise public awareness. Their information board can be seen at http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5556463

At intervals along the boardwalk across Shoreham Beach benches are provided - excellent spots to relax and stare out to sea.
