Portslade-by-Sea : beach-front houses, Western Esplanade
Exclusive development (ca.1909) of beach front houses. "An unusual seafront development, known as Hove Seaside Villas, is noted for its celebrity residents. It lies on the esplanade with a private beach and provides a striking rendered and castellated silhouette from Hove Lawns and across the port." - https://ww3.brighton-hove.gov.uk/sites/brighton-hove.gov.uk/files/downloads/conservation/UrbanStdy_West_Hove_final.pdf. "Judy Middleton in her "Encyclopaedia of Hove & Portslade" provides a fascinating history of this unusual development. The villas were designed by architect E J Holland for developer Michael Paget Baxter (MPB). From 1908 onwards piles were sunk 20 feet into the foreshore to support a huge concrete platform on which the villas were erected using 12" thick concrete blocks and railway sleepers. MPB and his wife lived in no.1 at the eastern end, the first one to be built. Originally it had tennis courts and a rose garden. They stayed put, even during WW2, when the villas were requisitioned by the Royal Canadian Airforce and an ack-ack gun was installed on the roof." - http://brightonbits.blogspot.com/2011/07/hove-seaside-villas-2.html.

1-11, Western Esplanade, Aldrington, Hove
Built between 1908-1918 by Michael Paget Baxter the then Lord of the Manor of Aldrington who would also acquire the title of Lord of the Manor of Lancing which then gave him legal rights to the ownership of the beach in front of the houses (The old spit formed by centuries of longshore drift which pushed the mouth of the River Adur as far eastwards as Aldrington was assigned to the parish of Lancing due to the simple fact that that was where the spit grew out from). Initially known as Aldrington Beach Bungalows, then Seaside Bungalows followed by Hove Seaside Villas it was numbered as part of Western Esplanade after the Second World War.
Despite the fact that immediately to the north is an industrial estate and to the west is a rather shabby area of open ground, the houses fronting the only area of private beaches within the city of Brighton & Hove have become a much sought after piece of property thus acquiring the informal nickname of 'Millionaire's Row'. The current well known residents are Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) and Heather Mills (ex Mrs Paul MacCartney) both of whom have owned the nearby
Image Other former residents include Nick Berry, Derek Jameson, Robin Ray and Oscar Loewenstein.
In the distance is the i360 whilst further afield are the cliffs of Rottingdean and Saltdean.

See
Image for information about these properties known as Millionaires Row. This view gives a better idea of its location wedged between their own private beach and an industrial estate. The area between the properties and the start of Shoreham nudist beach is very much a wasteland of broken concrete and when one of the residents has been in the news the hiding place of the paparazzi.
