Greenways
An ancient track now the principal route south out of Ovingdean to the A259. Prior to the existence of that road the route led to Ovingdean Gap a small dip in the cliffs lower enough to enable access to the beach below.

Ovingdean
A view of the modern part of the village that sprang up on Long Hill after 1919 initially as shacks and bungalows which were largely replaced by modern housing after the war. Built on a large former field called The South Laine according to Ovingdean's 1839 tithe map. The field in the foreground is Image, the road beyond Image, that running diagonally up the hill Image, and along the top Image In the distance is High Hill.

Ovingdean
The modern part of the village as viewed from the eastern slope of Cattle Hill in almost monochrome due to the falling snow. The old centre of the village to the north is based around the 11th century church and continued that way until the 20th century when the land was sold from the last lord of the manor to pay off accrued gambling debts to Brighton corporation. Initially they undertook little building but shacks began to spring up along the ridge of what was known as Long Hill and this continued up to 1939. After the way the council took control of building removing many of the shacks and replacing them with modern buildings with utilities. Consequently the whole western slope of Long Hill has now been built upon.

Ainsworth Avenue, Ovingdean
A residential road that runs diagonally down the western side of Long Hill between Image and Greenways. It was laid out in the 1920s following the line of a much older footpath and named after Victorian author Harrison Ainsworth who had resided in the village at Ovingdean Grange. Located on the site of a former field called The South Laine according to Ovingdean's 1839 tithe map. The old centre of the village can be seen in the distance beneath Cattle Hill. See also Image

Beacon Hill
The name of the road, the southern most in Ovingdean, that links Greenways at the bottom of the hill with Longhill Road at the top. I'd imagine once the freeze set in this road was not the best for trying to drive up or down.

Footpath to Cattle Hill
Taken from the start at Greenways. The footpath, which is also a permissive bridleway, can be made out by the few bushes next to the fence ascending the hill, the only thing to different the wide expanse of white caused by the snow that was falling at the time.
