Cuckmere Valley walk [23]
The Coastguard Cottages on the cliff edge at Cuckmere Haven. Starting from the car park on South Hill, the route leads south towards the sea then along the cliff tops to Hope Gap, Sleaford Head and Cuckmere Haven. The way is then inland along the bank of the Cuckmere River towards Exceat Bridge, before following the long-distance Vanguard Way back to the starting point. About 4 miles.

Coastguard Cottages, Cuckmere Haven
Built in the early 19th century to prevent smugglers using the isolated haven for their runs. To the right is old watch house and to the left are the former quarters for those stationed here. Today all bar one of the dwellings are used as holiday cottages. The cliffs surrounding the cottages have now had concrete defences built on the cliffs to protect them from erosion, images from a century ago show the cottages once had extensive back gardens. Viewed from the beach at low tide.

View ESE towards the Seven Sisters
Coastguard Cottages are in the foreground. This is a much-photographed view, but I guess it's always worth another go from a slightly different angle and in a different light.
