Coastguard Cottages, Cuckmere Haven

Image: © Simon Carey Taken: 29 Sep 2013

Built in the early 19th century to prevent smugglers using the isolated haven for their runs. To the right is old watch house and to the left are the former quarters for those stationed here. Today all bar one of the dwellings are used as holiday cottages. The cliffs surrounding the cottages have now had concrete defences built on the cliffs to protect them from erosion, images from a century ago show the cottages once had extensive back gardens. Viewed from the beach at low tide.
