The last houses on Edward Street before it becomes Eastern Road. Originally the junction was at the cross roads with Park Street and Lavender Street and numbering began at 96 from the latter. 104 is a former public house, the Star Inn, which closed in 1905 and has been a house ever since. Hereford Court is the large block on the left.

Tillstone Street
Head south back down West Drive then east down Park Hill then south into Tillstone Street. Another result of a slum clearance this street was erected in 1898 on the site of Spa and Egremont Streets. The newer houses to the right were added in the 1960s when Pilgrim Cottages, a row of almshouses constructed in 1852 in Spa Street, were finally demolished having survived the original clearance. Leicester Street, Brighton
A cul de sac off Tillstone Street though originally it ran from Edward Street to the south. The street was developed in the 1810s was filled with small cottages on the eastern side and at the far end were Pilgrims Cottages, almshouses for the over 60s in need. They were all demolished in the late 1950s leaving the street empty and used for access for the number 35 Egremont Place. The wall on the left contains back doors for properties on the same street. See http://regencysociety-jamesgray.com/volume24/source/jg_24_045.html for a view taken in 1954 and http://regencysociety-jamesgray.com/volume24/source/jg_24_047.html for a 1968 view when the street was largely demolished

Brighton: Edward Street
1960s residential and commercial developments dominate the scene here and, evidenced by the distant crane, work is ongoing. This view was taken from the traffic light controlled junction of Edward Street with Upper Rock Gardens to the right, and is the view looking in the opposite direction to Simon's Image It is to be hoped that the elderly lady in the pink coat with the walking stick got across the eastbound carriageway in time, as the lights had already changed...
