The Foundry, Foundry Street, Brighton
Originally the White Horse in the 1850s but became the Pedestrian Arms sometime in the latter half of the 19th, a name it retained until fairly recently. Both pub and street name recall the former Regent Foundry which operated from 1810 to 1912 and whose site is now occupied by the Royal Mail sorting office.

Foundry Street
A side street linking North Road to Gloucester Road and named after the former foundry that once lay beyond the buildings on the left that was originally built on open fields and eventually got engulfed by the northern expansion of Brighton in the 1840s. The foundry produced many works which still stand today including the original railings along much of the sea front. It was closed in the 1920s, demolished and replaced by a new Royal Mail sorting office which still stands today.

The Lanes, Brighton. Antiques shop.
This antiques and bric-a-brac shop is typical of what can be found in The Lanes, along with clothes shops, music shops and pubs. This view across the shop through the window shows the narrowness of the streets in this web of perpendicular streets and their special atmosphere.

Where is the damn chauffeur? Upper Gardner Street
Head west up North Road from the entrance of Kensington Gardens then north along Upper Gardner Street. The street dates from the 1820s and had been the site of an outdoor market since the 1890s when the Council got fed up with moving traders and their barrows on from various illegal pitches and gave them this street on a Saturday to trade in. The numbers on the left hand side of the road are the individual pitches. The seagull seemed fascinated with the old Bentley for a long time not moving when I walked closely by or when a car passed it. It was only when looking at the picture later that it became clear, he'd been attracted to his own reflection!
