Nepcote Lane, WORTHING, BN14 0SL

This road leads into the village of Findon as indicated by the sign at the roadside. This pub is on the corner of the road leading off the A27 and the A27, and the intersection is in the south western section of the grid square.

This pub is opposite the post office in the centre of Findon.

Once part of an ancient east-west road that linked Steyning to Arundel it is now a quiet residential backwater linking High Street to Nepcote Green.

A private road providing access to Image which the building on the left belongs to. Further down on the same side is the hedge that conceals Soldiers Field House, both that and the stables were built for former racehorse trainer Captain Ryan Price in the early 1970s.A few other properties line the right hand side whilst behind the photographer is the entrance to Image The lane is a public footpath that links Nepcote Lane to Stables Lane.

The building on the left is the Wattle House. It dates from the end of the 1700s when it was used to store wattle hurdles for the sheep pens used during the annual sheep fair. [https://fancyfreewalks.org/W.Sussex/Findon.pdf]

Nepcote is the name of the lane that runs from Nepcote Lane southwards to the entrance of Cissbury whereupon it turns west to the A24. It also forms the main access to the hamlet of the same name. To the left is Greenside Cottage which dates from the 19th century and over looks Nepcote Green whilst beyond is Coachmans which was built in the 18th century and was originally two dwellings until a conversion in the 1970s. Further on is the junction with Steep Lane.

A cul de sac that lies off Nepcote Lane. Originally part of a much larger Soldiers Field it was developed in 1934 with the construction of the Convent of the Holy Rood. This Anglican denomination remained here until selling it to the Catholic Convent of Our Lady of Syon in 1967 who continued running it until the early 1990s when costs forced them to move to smaller premises. The site remained empty for a while until plans were submitted to demolish whereupon the locals fought a long battle to prevent it, eventually losing and the planned demolition commencing in 1998. By the turn of the century a 27 house estate had been constructed within the old grounds.

A view of the section heading west from the junction with Convent Drive. Despite being developed the old hedgerow trees have been maintained to give the old lane a rural look. Onmly the park car hints at the residences that exist behind the trees.

A single track lane that runs along the northern edge of Nepcote Green and continues on to provide access for Cissbury Ring car park. Taken at dusk.

Currently dry, only the willow and the basin shape give a clue to its original identity.
