There are more shops along Richmond Hill however there is no main road linking it to Bournemouth Square. Nationwide Bank can be seen in the background.

The Bournemouth branch of Borders, like all the others, closed for good a couple of days before Christmas. It appears that the staff have expressed their feelings by rearranging the lettering of the 'Children's' section (upturning the 'd' and using the apostrophe as the dot on the 'i'). Its position at the back of the shop means that it is visible to keen-eyed passers-by who glance through the main doors. I'm pretty sure the Bournemouth branch of Borders was scheduled to close down yesterday – indeed it was reported as such in today's Bournemouth Echo. However, it was open for one final fling today; all items were five for £1. See also Image and Image

Amid considerable public opposition ("Oh no, not another Tesco" or "Another place for louts to buy cheap booze"), the former Borders store (see Image) will open as a Tesco Express in as little as ten week's time, by which time the premises will have been vacant just over a year. I'm sure the naysayers will boycott it even if they really need a quick pint or loaf.

The philanthropist, novelist and biographer Lady Georgiana Fullerton (1812 - 1885) was a regular worshipper here, and was also the founder of St Walburga's School in Bournemouth which still survives, albeit on a new site. Completed in 1875, Sacred Heart was Bournemouth's first Roman Catholic church that reopened in 2013 after an extensive £270,000 restoration. Image
