New Milton: the Oak & Yaffle
A sorry but not unusual sight nowadays is that of a closed down pub, such as here on the corner of Oakwood Avenue and Ashley Common Road. The word yaffle is another word for the green woodpecker; those who recall the children's television programme Bagpuss may recall that the woodpecker bookend was named Professor Yaffle. See Image for a picture of the pub sign.

Ashley, Oak & Yaffle
Pub at the corner of Oakwood Avenue and Bashley Common Road; "yaffle" is a southern name for green woodpecker. Internally, straight back bar, with two rooms: drinking to left, eating to right. TV, slot machines, darts, garden. Cask ale on offer at my visit: Jennings Cumberland. Closed weekday lunchtimes. For some customer comments, see http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/29/2940/Oak_and_Yaffle/Ashley

New Milton: the Oak & Yaffle pub sign
The sign, on Ashley Common Road, depicts the green woodpecker or yaffle, approaching its nest in an oak tree. Its good condition belies the sorry state of the now closed pub: Image
