A sorry but not unusual sight nowadays is that of a closed down pub, such as here on the corner of Oakwood Avenue and Ashley Common Road. The word yaffle is another word for the green woodpecker; those who recall the children's television programme Bagpuss may recall that the woodpecker bookend was named Professor Yaffle. See Image for a picture of the pub sign.
