Swanage train at Wareham, 1963
The push-pull train for Swanage, headed by an LSWR M7 0-4-4T, was the object of my trip from Weymouth, where we were on holiday. The bay platform no longer exists, and there is now a car park to the south of the station, as shown in Mike Faherty's

A train from Swanage approaching Wareham station
2017 is the first year of through timetabled services between the two towns since the line closed to passengers in 1972. The train consists of 4 carriages 'topped and tailed' by 2 class 33 locomotives. Swanage Railway has a diesel multiple unit currently being overhauled to provide the service.

Wareham station, car and train
The car is a 1934 Austin Ripley 10hp sports. Behind it, a push-pull train for Swanage, which the steam locomotive will push while the driver controls the train from a cab in the leading coach, waits in the south bay platform of Wareham station.

Wareham station, with locomotive filling with water
The locomotive is taking on water from the tower in the background. When its tanks are full, the train will move forward into the south bay platform of Wareham station, and form the next train to Swanage. In the background, a train from Swanage is arriving, with the steam locomotive pushing from the rear.

Taking Water at Wareham
The last of the great main lines out of London to retain steam traction was the South Western line from London Waterloo. Here a train bound for Weymouth and headed by Standard Class 5 locomotive 73085 takes water at Wareham station.

Branch train for Swanage at Wareham, Dorset
The Wareham to Swanage branch was one of the last branch lines of British Railways to retain steam passenger working, many of the others having gone over to diesels before this 1966 photograph was taken. In fact the Swanage branch itself was converted to diesel operation, using Hampshire diesel-electric units, on Monday 5 September 1966. The branch was closed to passenger traffic on Monday 3 January 1972, the last BR trains having run on Saturday 1 January. The line has now been reopened between Norden and Swanage as a preserved railway, and the link to National Rail at Wareham has been restored for occasional use. I am indebted to Mr Andrew Wright for this information
