Branch train for Swanage at Wareham, Dorset

The Wareham to Swanage branch was one of the last branch lines of British Railways to retain steam passenger working, many of the others having gone over to diesels before this 1966 photograph was taken. In fact the Swanage branch itself was converted to diesel operation, using Hampshire diesel-electric units, on Monday 5 September 1966. The branch was closed to passenger traffic on Monday 3 January 1972, the last BR trains having run on Saturday 1 January. The line has now been reopened between Norden and Swanage as a preserved railway, and the link to National Rail at Wareham has been restored for occasional use.
