Swanage features [3]
On Shore Road is this King Alfred Memorial. Erected in 1862 it is a Tuscan column, in granite. The memorial is inscribed 'In commemoration of a great naval battle fought with the Danes -in Swanage Bay by Alfred the Great. AD 877'. 'Erected by John Mowlem. AD 1862'. The cliffs of Ballard Point are seen in the distance. Listed, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1153297
Swanage is a coastal town in the Isle of Purbeck, some 6 miles south of Poole and 25 miles east of Dorchester. Originally a small port and fishing village the town flourished in the Victorian era after the arrival of the railway and it first became a significant quarrying port and later a seaside resort. Tourism is an important part of the economy albeit seasonal and residents commute to Poole and Bournemouth for permanent employment. The town is the terminus of the heritage Swanage Railway.

Swanage, King Alfred's Memorial
Situated on Shore Road and listed by English Heritage http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/Details/Default.aspx?id=108266&mode=adv this memorial was erected in 1862 by John Mowlem, to commemorate King Alfred's defeat of the Danes in Swanage Bay, in AD 877. Unfortunately, it is not known whether the Danish fleet perished at Alfred's hands, or by storm, or through mist. The cannonballs on the top (from the Crimean War) might be a touch anachronistic, but the seagull probably isn't bothered.
