Situated on Shore Road and listed by English Heritage http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/Details/Default.aspx?id=108266&mode=adv this memorial was erected in 1862 by John Mowlem, to commemorate King Alfred's defeat of the Danes in Swanage Bay, in AD 877. Unfortunately, it is not known whether the Danish fleet perished at Alfred's hands, or by storm, or through mist. The cannonballs on the top (from the Crimean War) might be a touch anachronistic, but the seagull probably isn't bothered.
