Bournemouth: view from East Cliff as Boscombe pier reflects the sunset
After a wet day, the surprisingly superb sunset behind us is reflected in the glasswork of Boscombe pier as we look down on it from about a mile away. In the distance, the waters of The Solent can be seen between the headland of Hengistbury Head (in front) and the Isle of Wight (horizon).

A hotel with history
The Cumberland Hotel, main sign. This particular hotel was built in 1937, to Art Deco style, thanks to a Mr Rowley. It is said to be one of the last free-standing such examples in Europe. During WWII, it was commandeered by the military to defend the vulnerable south coast, but afterwards became the largest Jewish Hotel in Europe, complete with its own synagogue. After many years as a religious meeting point, it was recently given a thorough and sympathetic renovation to restore it as one of Bournemouth's most prestigious hotels.

The Cumberland
Although the styling is redolent of Art Deco, the hotel is a little older than that.
