Marchwood Road, BOURNEMOUTH, BH10 5LA

A short crescent beginning and ending on Minstead Road, comprising decent bungalows and houses. The sign is a modern one, from 2010-15 when this more modern, abstract emblem rather than the traditional town coat of arms as the working logo of the council. Minstead is a New Forest village, as is Marchwood, whose namesake road comes off Minstead Road – but these are the only two roads so named in the area. The sign is from around 2000, and it morphed into another design, in blue rather than green and far more widely seen, including BOURNEMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL in smaller letters at the top, and the borough coat of arms on the left. Green Lane sounds like an original rural lane name, and I think that is so. Certainly, its rather serpentine course suggests a historical track, and it comes out here on East Howe Lane, another old route, with a green triangle with mature pine trees on it – the edge of it is on the right of the picture. The bungalows that typify this immediate area are no different here. The lane winds to an eventual dead end for modern traffic, on Learning Lane which I think may also have been an original track route. The sign is of a design that became prevalent in Bournemouth around 1990 and was in use for most of that decade. Many are starting to look a bit shabby now, the blue border fading and the white surface unpeeling, but this one is in pretty good condition. A short east-west road linking Howeth Road and Green Lane, used occasionally as a sort of cut-through – only occasionally because this is one of those areas where none of the roads goes fully between any of the major roads so you have to keep doing a left-right, and it would possibly have been just as quick therefore to stick to the bigger roads in the first place! The sign is of a design that became prevalent in Bournemouth around 1990 and was in use for most of that decade. Many are starting to look a bit shabby now, and the blue border has faded to nothing on this one. A small side road of bungalows off Fletcher Road, nearly at the top. The road sign is a standard one from around 2000-2006, perhaps a little earlier, featuring the borough coat of arms. Dowlands Road is shaped like a squarish crescent, with two turnings off Howeth Road, but with an extra little spur off one corner, meeting Green Lane. This sign faces up the little spur and is set in front of two of the bungalows on the inside of the crescent. The sign is the standard Bournemouth nameplate from the 1980s, affixed with tubular steel which protrudes at each side. It is quite wide with lettering well spaced, and with ROAD unabbreviated – I therefore wonder whether this sign has been recycled from a road with a longer name! A small, unsurprisingly named close off Dowlands Road, dating probably from the late 70s or early 80s, with a few bungalows on only one side and this wide grass verge on the other. The sign is the standard Bournemouth nameplate from the 1980s, affixed with tubular steel which protrudes at each side. For cul-de-sacs, it is common for these to incorporate the no-through road sign, as here. A short dead-end road, but a through route for pedestrians cutting off the corner of Kinson Road and East Howe Lane. From the map or on the ground, it is easy to appreciate that this was an original track which would have cut off the same corner when these were all lanes. It retains the 'laney' feel. The sign is a modern one, dating from around 2014-15, by which time the council had replaced the coloured logo, which had been prone to fading after a while, to simple wording BOURNEMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL in smaller type. It also refers to St. Merrin's Close, a short cul-de-sac of council semis. This public footpath leads from Green Lane to Heather Road. It is a narrow, grass/earth track which is quite overgrown. Perhaps it is little used because a much better, tarmacked path runs parallel 100 yards or so to the south. See Image for the next view along the path.
