Metal plate attached to stone post by the A65, in parish of LONG PRESTON (CRAVEN District), Long Preston, in pavement, below road level, next to wall, at bus stop, on North side of road. WR iron casting, erected by the County Council in the 19th century.

Old milestone
Looking across the A65 in Long Preston the position of the West Riding CC can be seen below road level. This is one of 615 set up in 1893/94 all over the old West Riding. The family firm of Gill and Frank Stead, stonemasons, of Mirfield were awarded the contract and had to complete the work in 12 months or incur a penalty. The work was done on time.

Old milestone
Looking along Main Street in Long Preston when travelling towards Hellifield, the West Riding CC milestone can be seen. The attachments for the milestones on this route were cast at the William Towler Globe Foundry in Leeds. They are fixed to their backing stone by 4 bolts but the lower two on this milestone are below pavement level.
