Darwen, including now demolished Belgrave and Two Gates Mills
Belgrave Mill is the red brick building behind and to the left of the horses. Two Gates is the older mill to the right of the horses in the photograph. Both have now (2008) been demolished and the sites redeveloped for housing.

Darwen - culvert exit at Union Street
The River Darwen flows through a culvert under Darwen town centre. This photo shows the metal guard to the culvert exit on the north side of Union Street.

The reference to William Snape on the metal guard is to the first mayor of Darwen. In the early years after the incorporation of Darwen as a borough in 1878, Darwen owed much to William Snape and his good governance. He ensured further growth for Darwen by paying great attention to such matters as sanitary improvements and the extension of gas and waterworks.
