The River Darwen flows through a culvert under Darwen town centre. This photo shows the metal guard to the culvert exit on the north side of Union Street. The upstream entry to the culvert is shown at Alexander P Kapp's Image The reference to William Snape on the metal guard is to the first mayor of Darwen. In the early years after the incorporation of Darwen as a borough in 1878, Darwen owed much to William Snape and his good governance. He ensured further growth for Darwen by paying great attention to such matters as sanitary improvements and the extension of gas and waterworks.
