2009 : Cottages on Bath Old Road
North of Radstock. The former coach road to Bath. The horses could manage it but they had to build a new road west of here to make an easier gradient for the motor cars.

Seen from Bath Old Road. A closer look at the white thing to the left shows it to be a traffic cone sitting on a post.

2009 : A field of autumn sown wheat
West of Bath Old Road, looking toward Clandown and Kitley Hill. The tumbled nature of the hills tells us we are in the east Mendips, further to the west the hills become broader, a little higher and more rounded.

Cattle by the Fosse Way
A field beside a layby on the A367 as it runs along a stretch of the Roman road. On the extreme right is the edge of a wooded tumulus, which straddles the easting gridline. The prominent wood is a mile away in Image and Image, by Braysdown Yard.

Beside the Roman road lies a past
The Fosse Way is a major Roman road that spans much of southern England. As it approaches Clandown from the north, this field provided several Roman artefacts. It is thought that there was some form of settlement here in the Neolithic and Iron Ages, but the Romans brought a range of buildings on top of the site. Some evidence of small scale smelting has been discovered, although the history of the settlement is not too clear. Further down the field are a couple of tumuli.

The Fosse Way's new form of welcome
The A367 takes in much of the old Fosse Way Roman Road, before slipping past the old colliery village of Clandown and down to Radstock. Visitors will be met with this sign - and a rather nice picture too!
