An old school on Old School Hill
South Stoke primary school buildings, although the school itself seems to have taken a radical departure from contemporary regulation. A benchmark is to be found on the main wall by the porch - see Image

Little building next to the village hall
The village hall was a school. Perhaps this little building housed outdoor toilets.

The Packhorse Inn, South Stoke
Sadly closed; this image was taken through wire-mesh site fencing. There are posters around 'Save the Packhorse Inn'. It is listed Grade II, and the details state that it was originally a farmhouse, and is dated 1674 but probably has the remains of an earlier building inside.

Nearly ready to re-open!
The Packhorse Inn is a seventeenth century brew house that served the population of South Stoke for generations until it hit financial troubles. It closed in May 2013. Various brewery firms and private owners took hold of the deeds but local support for a pub grew substantially and so began a campaign to raise sufficient funds to buy it outright as a freehold. After much effort and the backing of many local dignitaries and politicians, the funds of £1,025,000 were finally secured in late 2017. Work was commissioned to reinstate the old pub to its former (and legally binding) historic look, with a planned re-opening pencilled in for Spring, 2018.

Sign for the Pack Horse
The sign is a reminder of the horses which carried packs of goods, such as corn and wool, in the days before canals, railways and the like, catered for bulk transport. Pack horses often travelled in trains of up to forty at a time. They would have been a familiar sight on the roads, and the men in charge of them would have been very regular customers at inns, seeking refreshment for themselves and the horses.
