The Packhorse Inn is a seventeenth century brew house that served the population of South Stoke for generations until it hit financial troubles. It closed in May 2013. Various brewery firms and private owners took hold of the deeds but local support for a pub grew substantially and so began a campaign to raise sufficient funds to buy it outright as a freehold. After much effort and the backing of many local dignitaries and politicians, the funds of £1,025,000 were finally secured in late 2017. Work was commissioned to reinstate the old pub to its former (and legally binding) historic look, with a planned re-opening pencilled in for Spring, 2018.
