Pulteney Bridge, Bath
Robert Adam's bridge, 1769-74, is a bit of a throwback to medieval bridges such as London Bridge in its incorporation of buildings. It's been hacked about a fair bit since Adam's day, but he would probably recognise this view. Grade I listed. Street view: Image The weir, a flood-control measure, dates from 1968-72, by Casson & Conder (Image]).

Pulteney Bridge, Bath
Built in 1774 to connect Bath to the newly built town of Bathwick. The bridge is named after Frances Pulteney, wife of William Johnstone MP and first cousin of William Pulteney, 1st Earl of Bath. It seems a shame that we can't just find out who she was in her own right, rather than vaving to filter her through the lens of her male relatives, but never mind. The bridge is one of only four worldwide to feature shops built along its entire length on both sides.

Palladian style Grade I listed bridge crossing the river Avon in Bath. The structure was designed by Robert Adam, completed in 1774 and is one of only 4 known bridges in the world with shops and dwellings occupying the full span of the river on both sides. This picture shows the more architecturally detailed south facade and is taken from a pleasure boat just below the weir.

Pulteney Bridge in the Evening
Bath's famous bridge at the end of a beautiful January day. The old fashioned low level street lamps along here are so much more attractive for evening photography than the usual orange glare which just makes night pictures come out baked bean coloured.
