Old Cast Iron Road Sign
This sign stands in Hardington at the junction of Moor Lane , Pig Hill and Primrose Hill. The sign has been broken and repaired with two bolted on metal straps (one on each side) as cast iron is extremely difficult to weld. The casting appears to be quite basic because the letters are very erratic and uneven (the pattern may have been hand cut) and the section attached to the post is only half round indicating that cores were not used in the casting process. Modern cast signs have a fully round cylinder which slips over the post. Also unusual is the use of a full stop after the place-names.
