Bailey Bridge in Frome connected to Market Square
This Bailey Bridge is the only one used by the public in Somerset with a wood decking. The Local Council is threatening to remove it, vehicles are not now allowed to use it. Reg Ling is doing his best to get it restored. This bridge was removed in October 2010 and has now been replaced by a cable stayed bridge.

Blue iron
In a modern residential development close to the river, some old and heavy iron has been added to mark Frome's industrial heritage. This is part of the 'Singers Links' - formerly a large engineering and metalworking site that was only fairly recently demolished. Some of the machinery associated with the site has been kept as a reminder. See Image] for another view.

Next to the playground
Another view of the heavy foundry machinery that has been kept almost in situ on the former Singers site. Just to add a contrast, a children's play area (see Image]) has been included in the new housing development. See Image] for another view and some historical information. Also see Image] for a camel.

'Gordon the camel'
It's not the most obvious thing to find on a new housing development, but there is a bronze camel just here. In fact, it's quite appropriate as it marks the exact spot where an original casting was made many years ago.
General Gordon of Khartoum was a much revered Army officer whose efforts all over the globe were appreciated by many. In his honour, a bronze sculpture was made by Edward Onslow Ford in 1889 (which is now at Brompton Barracks, Chatham) and it was cast here in Frome by Singers. Using an original iron column, a modern version (and somewhat smaller - the original is life-size!) was placed on top.

Blue hammer power
The sight of some old fashioned industrial machinery is not so unexpected when the history of this site is revealed. This is part of the former Singers foundry, where plenty of original ironworking went on. Since it has now become a residential estate, an effort has been made to keep at least a few pieces here to mark the contribution it made to the local economy.
