Canal and M5 from Spon Lane
The canal is Brindleys Old Main Line from Birmingham to Wolverhampton. It is weaving in and out under the M5 at this point. The contractors are dismantling the scaffolding that was used on the enormous Oldbury Viaduct repair project. Not long before I had walked down that towpath through a veritable forest of scaffolding.

Road bridges old and new
The 'old' being the Spon Lane Bridge over James Brindley's Old Main Line canal; the 'new' being the rather more dominating concrete flyover of the M5. I know which I prefer to look at.

Spon Lane Bridge, BCN Old Main Line
This is looking along Brindley's Old Main Line towards Spon Lane Junction where there is a connection down to Telford's New Main Line. The M5 crosses high above - in the scene but somehow not part of it.

The Office Building, Chance Brothers Glassworks, Smethwick
The declining condition of the Glassworks' office building resulted in the demolition of its West and Eastmost extremities about 15 years ago; here its Eastern extremity is shown to be absent. To the right is the adjoining "Seven Storey Warehouse". Taken on an authorised site visit.

The former Chance's Glass Works, Smethwick
This ruinous building is a familiar sight to motorists on the M5 but this is the view from the back on Spon Lane. The British Crown Glass Company was established here c1812 and bought by Chance in 1824. The works was famous for glazing the Crystal Palace in 1851 and also for the manufacture of lighthouse lenses. The surviving 7 storey office block dates to 1847 and there are also some ruinous warehouse blocks. There are plans for the redevelopment of this important industrial site and it is to be hoped these come to fruition in the next few years.

The Seven Storey Warehouse, Chance Brothers Glassworks, Smethwick
The main building of those remaining on the site, long disused for its original purpose and instead now serving minor storage and residential functions. It is hoped that a full regeneration of the site is forthcoming. The scaffolding is not related to construction; it is a disused platform for advertisement displays, first erected in about 2003. Taken on an authorised site visit.

Old Main Line and the underbelly of the M5
The M5 motorway follows the course of the Birmingham Canal Navigations Old Main Line here. In the middle distance, you can just make out the Spon Lane top lock, one of three locks which take boats off to the right, down to the New Main Line.
