Interestingly in the 1891 Census the pub is called the Bulls Head, but in the 1901 Census it is the Old Bulls Head. Further along the road was the Big Bulls Head, which still exists today under that name. This must have caused some confusion! There were in Victorian times even more pubs around here, than there are today. Image Image

The Kerryman (3) - sign, 81 Digbeth, Birmingham
Kerryman is spelt as one word on the pub's website, and on the rest of its signage. The Guinness harp appears on this sign, which emphasises this is an Irish pub, in the city's Irish Quarter. Image Image

Former Kerryman Pub
Sadly, like so many other public houses, the Kerryman is now closed and to let. Seen here in better days Image The Digbeth Works (Institute) building immediately to the right of the Kerryman has some very fine detailing including a pair of impressive female figures guarding the entrances.

The tower belonged to Bonser's Lion Warehouse which was built in 1860 by J.R. Botham. Bonser & Co was a firm of iron merchants. Grade II listed. The adjacent no. 86 is by Edward Mansell, 1890, and borrows the window design from its neighbour. They were, respectively, Cow (vintage clothing) and Gregory Pank Hardware.
