Spiky, with plenty of Gothic pointed arches, and although decoration has not been skimped on, neither has it been overdone - there are expanses of plain brick. Birmingham School of Art, rose window, west gable
The window portrays lilies against a trellis. It was designed by John Chamberlain. "The attention to detail and naturalistic floral subject matter exemplify the designer's belief in Ruskin's notion of 'truth to nature'; thus the lilies are accurately portrayed and sharply modelled." It was made of buff terracotta around 1885. Much background is given in 'Public Sculpture of Birmingham including Sutton Coldfield' by George T Noszlopy, Liverpool University Press, 1998, page 85-6.
