Hockley Port basin 1
Hockley Port is a special enclave, accessible by boat from the Soho Loop of the Birmingham Level of the Birmingham Canal Navigations. Originally part of Brindley's contour canal from Birmingham to Wolverhampton, this basin was constructed for the interchange of goods between the canal and railway network. Now it has become a residential mooring, and features a facilities block for water, toilet and washing. Some of the resident boaters are more welcoming to visitors than others.

Hockley Port basin 2
Another view of the basin, showing one of the long dock arms used to trans-ship goods between railway and canal. In the days of the private railway companies, this was regarded as a very useful way of spreading their influence without acquiring powers to build more tracks.

Ex GWR 5700 class locomotive 9683 near Winson Green, 1960
Working a local freight train, on the former Great Western Railway main line between Birmingham and Wolverhampton. More than 800 locomotives of this class were built by the GWR between 1929 and 1948 and they were the company's workhorse locomotive for local freight and branch line passenger work. On the left a classic GWR semaphore signal, tubular steel post with finial, and slightly tapered lower quadrant arms.

Portland Terrace and Rutland Terrace
The detailing shows that these were not bottom of the range housing when built, but the lack of street frontage makes them less desirable in the age of the motor car. Dated 1888.

Canalside marker post at All Saints
Produced and installed by the British Waterways Board (before they became the Canals & Rivers Trust) this is one of a series of new marker posts along the Birmingham Canals Navigation; the biggest giveaway to its age is the fact that all the distances are given in metres.
