City of London coal tax post, by Cucumber Lane
These posts date from the mid 19th century, when the City of London Corporation imposed a tax on coal (and other goods) entering the metropolitan area. The posts stand at points on the boundary of that area - though the locations chosen seem pretty arbitrary. I just happened to spot this one when driving by - at the point where a drive joins a minor road. The casting is a more elaborate job than others I have seen, and seems to reflect the 'Egyptian' taste that was fashionable in Victorian times. For more on the history of these posts - and a view of the more commonly found type - see: Image

Little Berkhamsted Lane near the junction with Cucumber Lane
I am guessing cucumbers have been grown in the area, although I don't know what a Cumcum is which is the road just past here at the end of Cucumber Lane, but guessing it is also cucumber related.
