A1000 Hertford Road in Hatfield
Prior to the growth of Hatfield this used to form a section of the main A414 road to Hertford. The A1000 appears to start in Highgate as it peels off the A1 then runs north through Finchley, Barnet, Potters Bar, Hatfield, and Welwyn Garden City before terminating at the Danesbury roundabout to the north-east of Welwyn at Junction 6 of the A1(M). The road here also forms a section of National Cycle Network Route 12, which will eventually run from Enfield Lock to Grimsby via Peterborough and Boston. Quite who would cycle from Enfield to Grimsby or vice-versa is a matter of conjecture. The road looks oddly deserted here looking south from Mount Pleasant Lane with the westbound slip roads from the A414 visible on the left.

Hatfield: A414 at the Bush Hall interchange
This interchange allows traffic to pass between the A414 and the A1000 on the north side of Hatfield. It's good to see that selective mowing by the local council, solely of the verge immediately adjacent to the road, has allowed a fine display of wild flowers.

The restored eighteenth century, water-powered corn mill, adjacent to the Museum, is in regular use for grinding corn in the traditional way. The River Lea powers the mill.
